Diatomaceous Earth

Diatomaceous (said "die-uh-tom-ay-shus") earth, commonly referred to as DE, is a naturally occuring mineral made of fossilized remains of freshwater organisms and marine life (diatoms). It has a wide variety of uses including being an effective insecticide against bed bugs.

How does it work?

Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder with particles resembling bits of broken glass (under a microscope). The DE cuts into the waxy outer covering (cuticle) of the insects exoskeleton which causes the insect to dehydrate and utlimately die. DE is safe to use around people, animals, fish and food.

How do you apply it?

When applying DE, as with any pesiticide, you want to make sure that you follow all label directions very carefully. Even though it is a "green" product with low toxicity, it is still a pesticide.

There are many different forms of DE available (food grade, pool filter, pest control, etc…)  -  make sure the one you chose is sepcifically labelled for bed bugs. As with most pesicides, more is not necessarily better.

Assured Environmental Solutions uses DE in almost all of our treatments for bed bugs.
